The HTC* Vive VR headset was developed in a partnership between HTC* and Valve Corporation*. Voted a Best of CES 2016*, the headset is “powered by SteamVR*, offering room-scale experiences enabled by 360-degree motion tracking and the chaperone guidance system.”
The HTC* Vive plugs into PCs, offering 70 sensors for 360-degree head-tracking as well as a 90 Hz refresh rate (keeps down latency). Make sure you have lots of space though—the Vive* allows you to walk around while you play games. This really sets it apart from other VR headsets.

The New NUC: The Pint-Sized Powerhouse for Gaming
Gaming PCs traditionally haven’t been the smallest box on the block, so to speak. But developments like mini ITX cases and improved graphics cards have led to gaming PCs becoming smaller. Intel announced at CES* 2016 that it’s working on a gaming version of the NUC, which will be the smallest PC capable of connecting to an external graphics card dock.
The gamer-friendly NUC is code-named “Skull Canyon,” which combines “Skulltrail,” Intel’s earlier gaming platform, and “Rock Canyon,” the code name of the NUC platform. The company confirmed its plans for the new NUC at CES*, although it didn’t announce any details.
This new, smaller, gaming-focused NUC will feature a built-in Thunderbolt™ 3 port that offers up to 40 Gbps of data throughput. That means gamers can take advantage of major power from an external source. It’s great news for those gamers who want more immersive experiences with quicker response times.
Intel also announced that NUCs will be updated with 6th generation Intel® Core™ processors. The CPU supports DDR4 RAM and improved Intel® Iris™ Pro graphics. They’ll also include HDMI, four USB 3.0 ports, two internal USB 3.0 ports, an infrared sensor, and a mini DisplayPort.
All this power in a palm-sized PC is sure to change the game.
Thunderbolt™ 3 and USB-C: the 40 Gbps Dynamic Duo

As the computer, tablet, and smartphone industries move toward adoption of the new USB-C connector, a new version of Thunderbolt™ is quickly approaching. With speeds topping 40 Gbps, Thunderbolt™ 3 promises to provide another solution to unify various display, docking, power, storage, and network protocols currently available under the USB-C standard.
USB and Thunderbolt™ have been widely used to connect various peripheral devices providing storage, display, and power capabilities through distinct ports on devices. And until now, these ports have been separate. When Intel began working on Thunderbolt™ 3, the port was going to continue to be unique until standards began to emerge for USB-C.
The Eureka Moment
“The early exploration was started a couple of years ago and that’s when we were looking at which connector to use or to develop a new connector,” says Jason Ziller, Intel’s marketing director for Thunderbolt™. “At the very beginning of our research, USB Type-C did not exist and so we were exploring other options or doing a brand-new connector.”
According to Ziller, the “eureka moment” occurred when Intel engineers realized they could use USB-C as the port and protocol for Thunderbolt™ 3. USB-C offers a small, reversible, fast connector that also includes 100W charging capabilities. The previous versions of Thunderbolt™ used the same connector as Mini DisplayPort (MDP).
Thunderbolt™ 3 had two primary goals: double the speed of Thunderbolt™ 2 from 20 Gbps to 40 Gbps and lower the Z-height (the thickness of the port and cable) of the connector.
As devices continue to present thinner form factors, the space for ports is being compressed as well. USB-C has less height than both USB-A and previous Thunderbolt™ connectors. Intel engineers were faced with the task of squeezing more out of an increasingly thinner space.
Power to Do More
Thunderbolt™ 3 handles multiple protocols, including DisplayPort, USB, and PCI Express, which means there are multiple benefits for customers. The 40 Gbps speed allows for dual 4K displays (or a single 5K) display to be connected.
As with previous versions of Thunderbolt™, certified peripheral devices, of which there are currently more than 250, can be daisy-chained together. This means they can be plugged into one another and data and power can be transferred between the computer and these devices without reducing speeds or dropping data.
Since Thunderbolt™ 3 supports PCI Express, laptop customers can plug in third-party external graphics cards to allow for high-performance playback of graphics.
While there is an active push toward a world without wires, Ziller believes Thunderbolt™ 3 is the stepping stone to get there as Thunderbolt™ 3-based, single-wire docks will dramatically reduce the need for multiple cables going to multiple peripherals.
“One of the big things we push with Thunderbolt™ 3 is what we call single-cable docking. So with a single cable to your notebook you can connect to everything on your desktop, your 4K displays, your high-performance storage, your Ethernet, your keyboard and mouse, everything, plus you can charge the notebook,” says Ziller. “No wires is a great vision; we all want to go there. Single-cable docking is a great stepping stone to no wires.”

Deciphering Intel® processor numbers may seem like a daunting task, but they follow some general rules.
Read the top six things you need to know about Intel® processors!
|1.||An Intel® processor number indicates the processor’s performance relative to other processors within the same processor family.|
|2.||Multiple features are considered when assigning an Intel® processor number, including its clock and graphics level, its microarchitecture, and more.|
|3.||Which of these two has better performance—Intel® Atom™ E680 or E660? For processors that are in the same family and range (Intel® Atom™ processor E6xx), the one with the larger number has better performance.|
|4.||You shouldn’t use Intel® processor numbers to try and compare performance of different families. For example, you can’t compare the Intel® Core™ i3-3210M processor to the Intel® Pentium® processor G3820, even if the numbers are in the same range.|
|5.||You also shouldn’t compare processor numbers that are in different numerical ranges, but are in the same family. For example, you can’t compare the performance of the Intel® Celeron® processor B730 with the Intel® Celeron® processor B840 and get viable results.|
